How Each Type Is Constructed

The key to understanding these two flooring options starts with what's inside the plank. Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a single, uniform piece of wood milled from one species, typically ¾ inch thick. Its natural grain runs the full depth of the board.

Engineered hardwood, by contrast, is built in layers. A real hardwood veneer (called the wear layer) sits on top of multiple plies of cross-stacked wood or plywood. This cross-grain construction is what gives engineered hardwood its dimensional stability — it resists expanding and contracting when humidity shifts, which is the core weakness of solid wood.

The wear layer thickness on engineered hardwood typically ranges from 2mm to 6mm. Thicker wear layers allow more refinishing opportunities and are worth prioritizing if longevity is a concern.

Moisture, Temperature, and Where Each Can Go

Moisture is the single biggest factor in where you can install each type. Solid hardwood expands and contracts with changes in humidity and should never be installed below grade (in basements) or in rooms with consistently high moisture, such as bathrooms or laundry rooms. Above-grade installation in a climate-controlled space is where it performs reliably.

Engineered hardwood's layered construction makes it far more dimensionally stable. It can be installed below grade, on concrete slabs, and over radiant heat systems — environments where solid wood would warp, cup, or gap over time.

Installation, Refinishing, and Long-Term Maintenance

Installation: Solid hardwood is typically nail-down or staple-down, requiring a wood subfloor and specialized flooring nailers — a job many homeowners hire out. Engineered hardwood offers more flexibility: it can be glued, nailed, or floated (click-lock systems), making it more accessible for DIY installation over concrete or existing floors.

Refinishing: This is where solid hardwood holds a lasting advantage. A ¾-inch solid plank can typically be sanded and refinished six to eight times over its life. Most engineered hardwood products support one to three refinishes, depending on wear-layer thickness. If your priority is a floor you can restore to like-new condition repeatedly over 50+ years, solid hardwood has the edge.

Day-to-day maintenance is similar for both: sweep or vacuum regularly, wipe up spills promptly, and avoid excessive moisture when cleaning. Both types are susceptible to scratching from pet claws and furniture, so felt pads and area rugs are advisable regardless of which you choose.

A Note on Permits and Professional Help

Most standard hardwood floor installations don't require permits, but if your project involves subfloor modifications, structural changes, or additions to a radiant heating system, check with your local building department first. For large-scale projects or installations over complex subfloors, consulting a licensed flooring contractor is always a sound investment.
