Why Your Phone's Default Settings Often Work Against You

Smartphones ship configured for convenience, not for privacy. By default, many apps request broad access to location, contacts, and device sensors — often more than they need to function. Set or Strengthen Your Screen Lock

Go to Settings → Security (Android) or Settings → Face ID & Passcode (iOS). Choose a PIN of at least six digits, a strong alphanumeric passcode, or biometric authentication (fingerprint or face recognition) backed by a strong PIN fallback.

Avoid four-digit PINs, pattern locks, and any passcode that mirrors a birthday or address. Set your screen to auto-lock after one to two minutes of inactivity.

Tip: Biometric unlock is convenient and generally secure for everyday use, but your PIN is what protects the phone when biometrics fail or are bypassed — make it something genuinely hard to guess.

Review and Revoke App Permissions

On Android: Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager. On iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security. Work through each sensitive category — Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos — and ask: does this app genuinely need this access to function?

  • Set location access to While Using rather than Always for most apps.
  • Revoke microphone and camera access from any app that has no obvious audio or visual feature.
  • Restrict photo access to Selected Photos rather than full library where possible (iOS).
Tip: When you revoke a permission and an app still works fine, that's a sign it didn't need the access in the first place.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Key Accounts

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second verification step when you sign into an account from a new device. Set it up for your Apple ID (Settings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security) or Google Account (myaccount.google.com → Security), and then for email, banking, and social media accounts.

Use a TOTP authenticator app — which generates rotating six-digit codes — rather than SMS where the service allows it.

Warning: Store your backup or recovery codes in a safe, offline location. Losing access to your 2FA method without recovery codes can lock you out of your own accounts.

Limit Ad Tracking and Data Sharing

On iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track to prevent apps from requesting cross-app tracking via Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework.

On Android: Settings → Privacy → Ads → select Delete advertising ID or opt out of ads personalization.

These steps don't make you invisible, but they reduce the volume of behavioral data collected and shared across advertising networks.

Check Lock Screen and Notification Visibility

Your lock screen can reveal sensitive information — messages, email previews, banking alerts — to anyone who picks up your phone. On iOS: Settings → Notifications → select each app → choose When Unlocked for notification previews. On Android: Settings → Notifications → Notifications on Lock Screen → select Hide silent conversations and notifications or hide all.

Also disable Siri or Google Assistant responses from the lock screen if you don't rely on them: these voice assistants can sometimes surface personal data without authentication.

Tip: Disabling lock screen notification previews is especially worthwhile for messaging and banking apps, where the contents of a message are often more sensitive than the sender's name.

Use Your Phone's Privacy Dashboard

Both Android 12+ and iOS 14+ include a Privacy dashboard or App Privacy Report that logs which apps accessed your camera, microphone, location, and contacts — and when. Checking this report every few weeks takes under two minutes and often reveals surprising activity from apps you'd forgotten were installed.

Two-Factor Authentication Is Non-Negotiable

Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on your key accounts — email, banking, social media — is one of the single most effective security steps available to everyday users. Even if a password is stolen, 2FA blocks unauthorized access. Use an authenticator app rather than SMS when the service offers it, since text-message codes can be intercepted through SIM-swapping attacks.
